Alice Meichi Li [李美姿]
explodingsuns and I have been working on commissioned video game designs for character classes for Andrew Livy.. Here are a are the ones I've finished thus far.
Female Summoner Good and Evil
I was going for a sort of dichotomy, with floral motifs for the "Good" version and bestial elements for the "Evil".
She turns black when she goes evil? O_O
Urgh, I thought that same thing... The deeper tones of shading on the evil one make the good one look white in comparison.
They're great designs, but the hair thing is what's bugging me. It treads that line of Good = black women with chemically straightened hair (or white woman hair)
Bad = natural black woman hair.
I've also been doing character design and have been studying up on these land mines (see also: Resident Evil in Africa, where natives were murderous zombies and while the other playable female is black, she's light skinned and with silky hair, unlike every other african female zombie).
I just thought that the straightened hair = tame and natural/curly hair = wild.
My personal fav design is the "evil" one though anyway. lol And I intended for her hair to be white, but I suppose that'll translate better when I color it.
Before I begin I really want to emphasize that I think the designs are stunning, and that you truly have a talent for creative character design. I genuinely can't wait to see the next characters you design.
That said, and for what it's worth, my first reaction was the same as that of kusoyaro
I think people are reacting that way because the one on the left totally looks white (the finer-looking hair and the lighter skin tone - probably scanner artifact) compared to the one on the right (darker shading, African cornrows). I feel it might even be kind of dangerous to present the designs this way in the videogame, because I have no doubt they'll get similar reactions if it isn't made obvious that they're both black.
That said, I feel like if you just tweaked the left girl's hair so that there's no question it's African hair (I don't know exactly how, but I'm sure there's a way), and just toned her skin a lil darker, there'd no longer be a problem.
I hope this helps :) And I apologize if this feels like I'm stepping on your toes.
Not at all. :) These are by no means finished drawings -- they're rough sketches, where the client will choose certain ones to finish and model.
By the time it comes to the coloring/finishing stage, I will definitely keep your pointers in mind.
Based on those drawings? I'd totally be playing evil. ;)
Yeah I personally find her more badass, myself.. :x
I really like the evil girls feeties~!
Hopefully more to come when you're free :D
I really like them both, but I am more partial to the good summoner. I don't know if its the hair of the way she is standing but it she reminds me very much of a flapper! I am very interested in seeing more of this project as you guys work on it.
I think the hair is a Jazz-age style, so that may be where it's from. :) Thank you!
wow..I totally didn't realize they were the same person..but I wanna play the badass one!
Yeah, it's a rough sketch so it's not final yet. Haha, me too. :)
