London is Burning

"I will show you fear in a handful of dust."

"A woman drew her long black hair out tight
And fiddled whisper music on those strings"

Inspired by T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land", with subconscious recollection of John Constantine's appearance in Sandman (Pointed out by my husband, who found the subject matter similar).

John Constantine, Hellblazer, and Sandman are © DC/Vertigo Comics.

[info]explodingsuns and I have been working on commissioned video game designs for character classes for Andrew Livy.. Here are a are the ones I've finished thus far.

Female Summoner Good and Evil

I was going for a sort of dichotomy, with floral motifs for the "Good" version and bestial elements for the "Evil".

Urban Ecology [January 22nd, 2009 | 10:23 pm]
[Tags|, ]

This was done a while back as both a promotional image and a cover for a the children's version of the book, Urban Ecology by Pamela Peeters. (Beta site available here.) I can finally post it now that it's been publicly released. :)

Urban Ecology

I was asked to depict two versions of a woman, with one serving as a representation of her Anima and a connection to nature. I used the butterfly motif as symbolism for the spirit, in the gradient colors of the chakras.

Church v. State [November 7th, 2008 | 11:07 pm]
[Tags|, ]

I painted this illustration as a way of expressing my frustration at the way America has been heading in recent years.

In spite of the incredible step forward recently in the election of Barack Obama, the passing of Proposition 8 shows that we have a long way to go as a nation. In recent years more than ever, right-wing politics has brought religion into the equation -- an exercise that casts incredible aspersions on the very foundations of this nation.

One of the first cornerstones of America called for the separation of Church and State, and yet issues such as abortion and gay rights have absolutely no redeeming features in a secular context. How have we, as citizens in this Land of the Free, come to spit in the face of our Founding Fathers? They, above all, knew that religion pollutes politics and vice versa.

Christians don't deny Atheists any rights, and Atheism goes against the First Commandment. Why should they deny any rights to homosexuals from a few verses in the Bible?

Live, and let fucking live.

Created as a submission for the Pepper Project.

I wanted to do something a little different, but I hope the 100 peppers and 1 pepper blossom I included makes up for the departure from the typical Pepper style.

London Calling [January 21st, 2008 | 11:10 pm]
[Tags|, ]

I've been a Sandman fan since I was 11, and always thought Daniel should have gotten more love since he's the actual Dream now.

Death & Dream

I designed their clothing to pay homage to little revelatory symbols about their characters.. Such as how the "Death" card in the Vertigo Tarot was holding a blue rose, and Daniel was often pictured with poppies (symbolic of dreams for its narcotic nature). This also obviously includes the ankh sigils, Daniel's emerald (as opposed to Morpheus' ruby), and the ruby sleeve design I always loved from his original costume. Toss in a dash of Visual Kei/Gothic Lolita (especially because I love those cute little EGL tophats) inspiration, and here we are. I've got tons of love for the classic 80's punk look, but I figure they'd want to update their wardrobes a bit since then.

Set in London because the Death film will be, and I always loved the view of the Houses of Parliament across the Thames.

The Parting of Ways [December 6th, 2007 | 1:02 am]
[Tags|]
[Feeling |silent]
[Audio |Skindive - "No More Good Guys"]

Four of my paintings (The Angelic Destruction series and Elemental Sins: Ira) just arrived in California, now owned by a talented musician who founded a famous rock band.

Those paintings were done from a very cathartic time in my life and meant a lot to me. I suppose though, that it'll be more comforting knowing that he will take care of them as a supportive friend.

He also now owns the portrait I did of him and had framed.. I'm very happy with the framing work that Nancy from Da Vinci Artist Supply did (I highly recommend her), and wanted to share it.

She suggested the frame, which was reminiscent of studded leather that's so prominent in rock/goth culture.. The black on it was also distressed to show hints of red underneath that picked up the red in the portrait. I found it very fitting.

The possibility of genetic engineering producing artificially generic supermodel-esque people.
