Bury Me Alive

Finally, a new painting. Sorry for the lack of art (and otherwise) updates. :( Life has been crazy lately. But I hope you guys enjoy!

We Are The Fallen

All I see is black and cold
As I try to pull you down
To the ground, the ground

You bury me alive
And everybody's got to breathe somehow
Don't leave me, die
Too consumed by your own emptiness and lies

My friend Ben's new band. :) Support them! http://www.wearethefallen.com
The butterfly is a classic symbol of rebirth after death. I thought it was appropriate, considering the history of most of the band members.

This and many other prints of my artwork can be found at my store: store.alicemeichi.com

Geekery Update

I recently found out that an article I wrote reviewing Sam Kieth's comic, My Inner Bimbo, was quoted on the back of the newly-collected trade paperback.
Read the original article here: "Embracing the Inner Bimbo" for The Weekly Planet
Buy My Inner Bimbo TPB: Amazon.com

Front Cover

Back Cover, with quote

Naturally I was quite excited, as Sam Kieth has been one of my comic-creator heroes for about 14 years now since The Maxx first came out. :) Go and buy the graphic novel! It's totally worth it.

I used the butterfly motif as symbolism for the spirit, in the gradient colors of the chakras.

Death is not the end.

Dear Readers,

Sincerest apologies for not posting much as of late. Last year was an exceedingly difficult one for me in terms of familial matters -- a subject of which I have lamented upon extensively in my locked entries. I'm certain no one needs a rehash. I will be more personable in 2009.

As a sort of symbol of this renewal, I have changed the username for this journal from "himemiya" to alicemeichi.
Church v. State

I painted this illustration as a way of expressing my frustration at the way America has been heading in recent years.

In spite of the incredible step forward recently in the election of Barack Obama, the passing of Proposition 8 shows that we have a long way to go as a nation. In recent years more than ever, right-wing politics has brought religion into the equation -- an exercise that casts incredible aspersions on the very foundations of this nation.

One of the first cornerstones of America called for the separation of Church and State, and yet issues such as abortion and gay rights have absolutely no redeeming features in a secular context. How have we, as citizens in this Land of the Free, come to spit in the face of our Founding Fathers? They, above all, knew that religion pollutes politics and vice versa.

Christians don't deny Atheists any rights, and Atheism goes against the First Commandment. Why should they deny any rights to homosexuals from a few verses in the Bible?

Live, and let fucking live.

Private Commission: Nebula

Nebula

The client asked for a portrait of Cloud from Final Fantasy VII, in a techno/club inspired atmosphere. I gave him a rough sketch here, with the musical/club elements to be added in the coloring stage. (The sheet music used was "Cloud's Theme" from the soundtrack.)

He reviewed the sketch and requested for the hair and collar to be made bigger, so here's the finished sketch.

The Society of Illustrators Los Angeles has accepted one of my pieces into Illustration West 46. Upon the request of the client who commissioned the image that was accepted, it cannot be published online.

But in brighter news, Evan Miller of Anime News Network recently interviewed me for his column, "The Gallery". Thanks, Evan. :)

Click here to read the interview

Married

In the end, I think it was more sincere and personal that way. Thanks to everyone who helped out and made it possible! I think Michael looks incredibly dapper in my father's old suit.. ♥

Pepper Project: Capsicum

Created as a submission for the Pepper Project.

I wanted to do something a little different, but I hope the 100 peppers and 1 pepper blossom I included makes up for the departure from the typical Pepper style.

Capsicum

London Calling

I've been a Sandman fan since I was 11, and always thought Daniel should have gotten more love since he's the actual Dream now.

Death & Dream

I designed their clothing to pay homage to little revelatory symbols about their characters.. Such as how the "Death" card in the Vertigo Tarot was holding a blue rose, and Daniel was often pictured with poppies (symbolic of dreams for its narcotic nature). This also obviously includes the ankh sigils, Daniel's emerald (as opposed to Morpheus' ruby), and the ruby sleeve design I always loved from his original costume. Toss in a dash of Visual Kei/Gothic Lolita (especially because I love those cute little EGL tophats) inspiration, and here we are. I've got tons of love for the classic 80's punk look, but I figure they'd want to update their wardrobes a bit since then.

Set in London because the Death film will be, and I always loved the view of the Houses of Parliament across the Thames.

The Parting of Ways

Four of my paintings (The Angelic Destruction series and Elemental Sins: Ira) just arrived in California, now owned by a talented musician who founded a famous rock band.

Those paintings were done from a very cathartic time in my life and meant a lot to me. I suppose though, that it'll be more comforting knowing that he will take care of them as a supportive friend.

He also now owns the portrait I did of him and had framed.. I'm very happy with the framing work that Nancy from Da Vinci Artist Supply did (I highly recommend her), and wanted to share it.

She suggested the frame, which was reminiscent of studded leather that's so prominent in rock/goth culture.. The black on it was also distressed to show hints of red underneath that picked up the red in the portrait. I found it very fitting.
